Winter Wonderlights

Sovereign Hill’s amazing Winter Wonderlights installation has been declared complete for another year. A tourism highlight of the Melbourne Winter Calendar, the Winter Wonderlights festival attracts over 100,000 visitors! People travel from near and far, rugged up in beanies, scarves and mittens, to enjoy a fun-filled day of Christmas in July celebrations. Even Bec Judd made it to Ballarat to shoot a special segment for Postcards!

JAK Creative were thrilled to be given the challenge of reimagining the existing Christmas decorations for the main street of the Historical Museum, giving them new colour, vibrancy and style. From barrel wraps, tree decorations, outdoor wreaths, swags of garland and finishing touches for the shops and Food Hall marquee, the JAK Team got right into the festive and pioneering spirit.

This was a design challenge for us in quite a unique way, as we needed to produce the decorations with the same materials and finishes as those that could be found in 1851. In order to maintain it’s authenticity, Sovereign Hill has strict (but friendly) guidelines to ensure they deliver a historically accurate experience. As a team that LOVE attention to detail, this was a perfect brief to get us thinking outside the box and approach our designs in a way we hadn’t before. It’s projects like these that keep us fresh and curious and we loved every part of the process.

Famous for now being Australia’s largest light projection spectacle staged on one site, this year was bigger and better than ever. 2018 saw a more immersive and technical light show and 3D projection mapping choreographed to music for 25 historical buildings, as well as 15km of fairy lights.

We were lucky enough to be invited to the preview event to see the light show switched on for the public for the first time this year. It was like being in a very large snow dome but better. Almost like being captured in an animated movie, the immersive experience of light, music and the wonder of faux snowfalls was completely enchanting. The evening was topped off perfectly with a mulled wine and delicious winter fare in the Victoria Theatre. Being even a small part of such an incredible production filled us with pride and also with awe of the incredible team from Sovereign Hill who brought together the massive team of Melbourne specialists, and more-so for having such incredible vision and commitment to excellence.
